GIVING SUGGESTION AND OFFERING TO DO SOMETHING
Suggestions
If we make a suggestion, it means that we mention a possible
course of action to someone. There are a number of expressions which we can use
to make suggestions.
Asking for Suggestions
Shall I/We + Verb 1
Example : Shall we go home early today?
- What shall I say to my parents?
- Do you have any suggestion?
- What do you recommend?
- Do you have any advice for me?
- Will you give me some suggestion, please?
- Any idea?
- Can you give me some advice about…?
Giving Suggestion
- Could
Ex:
-You could go home early
-You could get a new job
- Might
Ex :You might tell your problem to your parents
- Should
Ex:
-You Should see the doctor
-You should finish your homework immediately
- How about/ What about + -ing
Ex ;
-How about starting a book club?
-What about opening your present now?
- How about+ Simple Present?
Ex : How about I pick you up et eight o’clock on my way to the
airport?
- How about and What about + noun phrase
Ex :
A : Are you hungry?
B : Yeah, how about some lunch?
We often find it in
advertising:
- Why not ...? and why don't ...?
Ex : Why not take a break in the south west?
To make a specific
suggestion:
Ex : You look really red Why don't you toke some time out and
rest?
- Lets... and let's not...
Ex :Let’s call Michael and see if he knows how to fix H.
Another example :
- You should…
- You need/ought to…
- You had better…
- You ought to…
- I think you should….
- I advise you to…
- I suggest you to…
- I suggest that you….
- I recommend you to…
- Maybe you should….
- If were you, I would...
- If were in your situation, I would...

Accepting suggestion
- Sure, let's do H then.
- Yeah that's a good idea.
- Sure, why not?
Declining suggestion
- Maybe some other time
- Sorry, I can't go
- I don't think H's a good idea
- I'm affraid I can't
- I'd rather doing something else
A: Excuse me, sir.
B: Yes?
A: Do you mind not to smoke here?
B: What’s your problem? There’s no sign that says it’s forbidden to smoke in this area. It means that I can smoke here.
A: That’s true, but this is a public area. Your cigarette is harmful for all people here.
B: People aren’t complaining except you.
A: I don’t want to make a scene here, so I suggest you to smoke somewhere else. Can’t you see? There’re many children here.
B: All right. I’ll leave and smoke somewhere else.
A: Thank you. I appreciate that.

Giving Offers

Accepting Offers
- Sure, Thank you
- Yes, I’d love to
- Yes, please. Thank you
- That’s very kind of you
- That would be very nice
Declining Offers
- I’m sorry. I can’t
- I’d love to but...
- No. But thank you for the offer
- Thank you. But I’m busy at this moment
- Thank you for your kindness. But I can’t handle it
A: Could I help you to choose the best ticket for your trip Sir?
B: For sure, it would be a great idea. I kind of confuse, to choose the best train for my trip.
A: It is not a problem sir, I can help you to find a good ticket. Where would you heading to?
B: I Am heading to California.
A: Okay sir, here is your ticket.
B: Thank you very much young man.
A: You are welcome sir.
